  • -MRI·MRA,

  • MRI、MRA、

Information on National Health Insurance and Private Insurance for International Students

To reduce the financial burden of medical expenses that may arise during international students’ stay in Korea and to support a stable student life, information on enrollment in Korea’s National Health Insurance and private insurance is provided below.

In particular, international freshmen, transfer students, and returning students for the second semester of the 2026 academic year must check their status of stay and the date on which their National Health Insurance coverage begins.

Currently enrolled students who need to verify their National Health Insurance enrollment status or who wish to obtain additional medical coverage beyond National Health Insurance should also refer to the information below.

1. Students Covered by This Notice

  • International freshmen and transfer students for the second semester of the 2026 academic year
  • International students returning from a leave of absence for the second semester of the 2026 academic year
  • Currently enrolled international students who need to verify their National Health Insurance enrollment status
  • Students who may have a gap in medical coverage before their National Health Insurance coverage begins
  • Students who wish to obtain additional medical coverage beyond National Health Insurance

2. National Health Insurance Enrollment Date by Status of Stay

A. Degree-Seeking Students: D-2

International students holding D-2 status are, in principle, enrolled in National Health Insurance from the date they enter Korea.

However, students entering Korea for the first time who have not yet completed foreigner registration are enrolled from the date of their foreigner registration.

Enrollment in National Health Insurance is automatic, and no separate application is required.

Therefore, D-2 freshmen and transfer students entering Korea for the first time may have a period during which National Health Insurance does not apply, from the date of entry into Korea until the date of foreigner registration.

After re-entering Korea, returning students should contact the National Health Insurance Service to confirm the date on which their National Health Insurance eligibility begins and whether insurance premiums have been assessed.

B. General Trainees: D-4

Students holding D-4 status, including general Korean-language trainees, are automatically enrolled in National Health Insurance on the date that six months have passed since their entry into Korea.

However, students holding D-4-3 status who attend elementary, middle, or high school are enrolled based on their date of entry or the date of their initial foreigner registration, in the same manner as students holding D-2 status.

General D-4 language trainees may not be covered by National Health Insurance during the first six months after entering Korea. They should therefore make separate arrangements for medical expense coverage during this period.

3. Circumstances in Which National Health Insurance May Not Apply

Students in any of the following situations may have a period during which National Health Insurance does not apply.

  • From the date of entry until the date of foreigner registration for D-2 students entering Korea for the first time
  • During the first six months after entry for D-4 general trainees
  • When National Health Insurance eligibility has been terminated due to the expiration of the authorized period of stay
  • When National Health Insurance eligibility has been terminated due to staying outside Korea for more than one month

However, when an international student who holds a valid status of stay loses National Health Insurance eligibility due to departure from Korea and subsequently re-enters Korea, the student will, in principle, regain eligibility from the date of re-entry.

Students should contact the National Health Insurance Service to confirm their individual eligibility status.

Please note that students who receive medical treatment during a period when National Health Insurance does not apply may be required to pay the full cost of treatment themselves.

4. National Health Insurance Premiums for International Students in 2026

In 2026, international students holding D-2 or D-4 status who meet the premium reduction requirements established by the National Health Insurance Service are charged a monthly premium of KRW 79,320 after a 50% reduction.

In principle, the premium reduction applies only when both of the following conditions are met: monthly income of KRW 300,000 or less and a property tax assessment value of KRW 135 million or less.

However, the actual premium assessed may vary depending on each student’s income, property, and eligibility status. Students must check the payment notice issued by the National Health Insurance Service.

In principle, foreign residents enrolled as self-employed insured persons must pay the premium for each month in advance by the 25th day of the preceding month.

For example, the National Health Insurance premium for September is, in principle, due by August 25. However, individual payment deadlines may differ due to initial enrollment, changes in eligibility, or other circumstances. Students must therefore check the payment notice issued by the National Health Insurance Service.

Failure to pay National Health Insurance premiums may result in restrictions on health insurance benefits and may also cause disadvantages during immigration-related reviews, including applications for an extension of stay. Students must comply with the applicable payment deadlines.

5. Main Coverage Provided by National Health Insurance

International students enrolled in National Health Insurance are generally eligible to receive health insurance benefits in the same manner as Korean nationals.

However, National Health Insurance does not cover the full cost of all medical services. Patients are required to pay a portion of the cost depending on the type of treatment and the type of medical institution.

  • Covered inpatient treatment: generally, approximately 20% is paid by the patient
  • Covered outpatient treatment: approximately 30% to 60% is paid by the patient, depending on the type of medical institution and treatment
  • Prescription dispensing at pharmacies: when covered by National Health Insurance, the patient is required to pay a portion of prescription and medication costs
  • Certain serious illnesses, including cancer and rare diseases: the patient’s share may be reduced after registration under the Special Co-payment Reduction Program
  • Non-covered examinations and treatment, treatment for cosmetic purposes, certain vaccinations and health examinations, and additional charges for higher-grade hospital rooms: National Health Insurance may not apply or may apply only to a limited extent

For outpatient treatment, the patient’s share is generally lower at primary clinics. The patient’s share may be higher when using larger medical institutions, such as general hospitals or tertiary general hospitals.

National Health Insurance provides coverage for basic medical expenses, including inpatient care, outpatient care, and prescriptions. However, students may still be required to pay statutory co-payments and expenses for non-covered services.

6. Information on Private Insurance

Private insurance is insurance purchased separately from National Health Insurance.

Private insurance may be purchased to supplement gaps in coverage that may occur before National Health Insurance coverage begins, as well as co-payments and non-covered medical expenses under National Health Insurance.

The University does not currently require all international students to purchase private insurance. Students may decide for themselves whether to purchase such insurance.

However, private insurance is recommended for the following students:

  • Freshmen, transfer students, and returning students who have a gap in medical coverage before National Health Insurance coverage begins
  • D-4 general trainees who are not covered by National Health Insurance during the first six months after entering Korea
  • Students who wish to obtain additional coverage for National Health Insurance co-payments or non-covered medical expenses
  • Students who require additional coverage for accidental injury or illness-related death, permanent disability, personal liability, repatriation expenses, or similar risks

7. General Coverage Provided by Private Insurance

Depending on the insurance policy, private insurance for international students may provide coverage for the following:

  • Hospitalization expenses arising from accidental injury or illness
  • Outpatient and prescription medical expenses
  • Co-payments for services covered by National Health Insurance
  • Certain non-covered medical expenses
  • Items covered under separate optional riders, such as MRI, MRA, injection fees, and manual therapy
  • Death or permanent disability resulting from accidental injury or illness
  • Personal liability arising from daily life
  • Special expenses for foreign nationals, including repatriation expenses

However, deductibles and coverage limits differ by insurance policy, and the following items may be excluded from coverage or subject to restrictions:

  • Medical conditions already under treatment before the insurance policy began
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Mental illnesses or psychiatric treatment
  • Health examinations and vaccinations
  • Treatment for cosmetic purposes
  • Dental and Korean medicine treatment
  • Diseases and treatments excluded under the relevant insurance policy

Actual coverage varies by insurance product. Students must review the insurance terms and conditions and all exclusions before purchasing a policy.

8. Estimated Cost of Private Insurance

Based on group insurance arrangements for international students operated by other universities in 2026, the following insurance premiums have been identified:

  • Six-month coverage: approximately KRW 42,000
  • Twelve-month coverage: approximately KRW 60,000
  • Monthly equivalent: approximately KRW 5,000 to KRW 7,000

These amounts are provided only as references based on group insurance contracts at certain universities and do not apply uniformly to all insurance products.

Premiums for private insurance purchased individually may vary depending on the insured person’s age, status of stay, coverage period, National Health Insurance enrollment status, scope of coverage, and coverage limits.

Insurance companies identified in group insurance arrangements for international students at other universities include DB Insurance, KB Insurance, and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance.

These companies are examples of insurers used in group insurance contracts at other universities. Students must separately contact each insurance company to determine whether individual insurance products are available and to confirm the applicable coverage conditions.

The University does not designate or recommend any particular insurance company or insurance product and does not guarantee the coverage provided by any insurance policy.

9. Matters to Confirm Before Purchasing Private Insurance

Students considering private insurance must confirm the following:

  • Whether medical expenses incurred in Korea are covered
  • The coverage start date and end date
  • Whether coverage applies during periods when the student is not enrolled in National Health Insurance
  • Coverage limits for inpatient, outpatient, and prescription medical expenses
  • The deductible or other amount that the student must pay
  • Whether non-covered medical expenses are covered
  • Whether pre-existing conditions or specific treatments are excluded from coverage
  • The insurance claim procedure and required documents
  • Whether consultation and claim assistance are available in languages other than Korean

Students may decide for themselves whether to purchase insurance. However, before purchasing a policy, they must confirm the coverage period, whether medical expenses incurred in Korea are covered, the applicable deductible, coverage limits, and coverage exclusions.

10. Important Notes

  • National Health Insurance is mandatory under applicable laws and regulations, and persons subject to enrollment are required to pay National Health Insurance premiums.
  • Private insurance is separate from National Health Insurance.
  • Students who have a gap in coverage before National Health Insurance coverage begins should prepare for medical expenses that may arise during that period.
  • Private insurance premiums and coverage may vary depending on the insurance company and insurance product.
  • The insured person is ultimately responsible for deciding whether to purchase an insurance policy and for confirming its coverage.
  • Students must contact the National Health Insurance Service directly regarding individual matters, including the National Health Insurance enrollment date, premium assessment details, and any outstanding premiums.
  • International freshmen, transfer students, and returning students for the second semester of the 2026 academic year must confirm their National Health Insurance enrollment status and the date on which their coverage begins after entering Korea.

Currently enrolled students must also confirm their National Health Insurance status if their eligibility changes due to a change in status of stay, return from a leave of absence, re-entry into Korea, or any similar circumstance.
